What is Dosage Form of Tablets and Their Types?

Tablet can be formulated in different shape and size like it can be in spherical form, elongated form, rhombus form, triangular form. Some tablets are flat and some tablets are in biconvex form.

There are number of dosage forms of pharmaceutical formulations. Tablet is one of the oral solid pharmaceutical dosage forms.

 

Tablet is a dosage form containing active pharmaceutical ingredients and some suitable excipients.

 

Tablet can be formulated in different shape and size like it can be in spherical form, elongated form, rhombus form, triangular form. Some tablets are flat and some tablets are in biconvex form. Some tablets are plain at both the sides and some tablets are plain at one side and scored at other sides. Some tablets are debossed with some special symbols.

Types of Medicine Tablets

  • Uncoated tablets - These tablets are in uncoated form without any coating. The disintegration time of uncoated tablets is not more than 15 minutes.
  • Film coated tablets - These tablets are coated with a thin film layer. The disintegration test of film coated tablets is not more than 30 minutes.
  • Sugar coated tablets - These tablets are coated with sugar covering. It makes the tablet sweeter, the disintegration test of sugar coated tablets is not more than 60 minutes.
  • Enteric coated tablets - These tablets are coated with special enteric coating, that prevents the tablet from disintegration in stomach. An enteric coated tablet remains in 0.1 M HCL for 2 hours without disintegration, then it is passed to mixed phosphate buffer and disintegrated within 45 minutes.
  • Effervescent tablets - These tablets get disintegrated within 1 minute with effervescence.
  • Chewable tablets - These tablets are for chewable purpose, not for swallowing. Disintegration test is not applicable for chewable tablets.
  • Dispersible tablets - These tablets are get dispersed in normal water within 3 minutes.
  • Modified release tablets/ Sustained release tablets/ Delayed release tablets/ controlled release tablets - These tablets are designed with matrix formation that modifies the release of tablet. Disintegration test is not applicable for these tablets.
